“China is upending the global plastics market,” says Bloomberg, the result of a new ban on  accepting plastic garbage from other countries for recycling.

  • The ban is intended to both ameliorate pollution and push Chinese manufacturing up the value chain.
  • China has already begun buying new plastic to replace supplies that used to come from recycling plants.
  • The ban will both drive demand for new plastic and reduce supply of plastic made from scrap. Bloomberg quotes an industry analyst who says that “the U.S. is the only country in a position to quickly fill the gap.”
