Artist who filmed Beijing eviction aftermath detained, then released on bail

Politics & Current Affairs

Hua Yong ๅŽๆถŒ, the artist who documented the destruction and social turmoilย that resulted from Beijingโ€™s migrant evictions, had quite the weekend.

  • He made it out of Beijing to Tianjin, where he filmed severalย tense videos in which he says that police โ€œhave arrivedโ€ at his door (he also records bangingย on his door and himself speakingย with the people) and an emotional videoย in which he sings โ€œHappy Birthdayโ€ to his three-year-old daughter and wishes that China could be โ€œjust, fair, free, democratic and have freedom of speech.โ€
  • Police detained him for โ€œgathering a crowd to disrupt traffic,โ€ย his friends toldย the AFP, but then released him on bail.
  • The New York Times notesย (paywall) that his form of bail โ€œallows the police to continue investigating for up to a year,โ€ and that though he likely wonโ€™t face charges, he โ€œcan be monitored and face restrictions on his ability to travel and speak publicly.โ€
  • Hua is now far away from Beijing in Chengdu, the capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province, where his daughter lives, a friend said.
