Friday Song: Spring is here

Society & Culture

You might disagree if you live in the northeastern part of the United States, but spring has arrived. The birds are out in Beijing, central heating has been shut off, and it’s warmer outside than in (it’s a northern China thing, for those who have never experienced it).

Here’s a song for the season — Flowers Bloom in Spring (春天花会开 chūntiān huā huì kāi) — by Taiwanese singer Richie Jen. Lyrics with our translation:

Flowers Bloom in Spring

Flowers bloom in spring
Birds are free and unrestrained
I’m still waiting
Waiting for my love
You hurry back (hurry back soon)

Always pretending not to care
Passing outside your family’s door
Expecting your beautiful silhouette
From far, far away
My angel, my love
For you I fear no wind or exposure
Fate is thus arranged
Only the streetlight, it smiles, I stay

My love, I wait
Come back to share my love
Winter wind brings snow
Flowers withered will still bloom
Birds next year will return as before
Only I wait till both temples turn white

In old days, the acacia tree
Grew for me personally
A vague human shadow
Only the red color changes
You’re there, my love
Disappearing in the vast crowd
Reality’s always a little helpless
Beautiful conclusion, slowly looking forward
My love, I wait
Come back to share my love

Flowers bloom in spring
Birds are free and unrestrained
I’m still waiting
Waiting for my love
Winter wind brings snow
Flowers withered will still bloom
Birds next year will return as before
Only I wait till both temples turn white (flowers bloom in spring)
You hurry back (birds are free and unrestrained)
Hurry back soon (winter wind brings snow)
I want you to come back (I’m still waiting)
Hurry back soon
