Unintended consequences — trade war edition

As China and the U.S. continue to slouch toward a trade war, their allies, trade partners, and rivals prepare for all contingencies:
- Japan, South Korea, and China hold a summit tomorrow in Tokyo: Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will host Premier Li Keqiang and President Moon Jae-in for the first such meeting since 2015. NBC says that the three countries intend to “boost trade cooperation against the threat of President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies,” and that the American leader’s threats have caused them to “set aside disputes.”
- Chinese exports rebounded in April, and the China-U.S. trade gap widened, “as companies rushed to make shipments ahead of expected tariffs,” according to the Wall Street Journal (paywall).
