China shakes up its propaganda department

Politics & Current Affairs

The South China Morning Post saysย that โ€œChina is shaking up its propaganda and internet leadership as it tries to improve the countryโ€™s image abroad and ensure online views toe the Communist Partyโ€™s line.โ€

  • โ€œThe propaganda work โ€ฆ overhyped Chinaโ€™s riseย to becoming a great power, and that image looked pale and unconvincing after the United States started a trade war with Chinaโ€ฆ Itโ€™s a strategic mistake or failure. Someone has to be responsible,โ€ one analyst told the SCMP.
  • Xu Lin ๅพ้บŸ is expected to take chargeย of the State Council Information Office to coordinate propaganda directed abroad. Xu is currently head of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). Zhuang Rongwen ๅบ„่ฃๆ–‡ is said to be Xuโ€™s replacement as Cyberspace chief. Both men are said to be Xi allies. You can find brief biographies of Xuย and Zhuangย on Chinavitae.

With the trade war animating Chinaโ€™s critics in America, and global awareness growing of intensified repression of Chinese civil society, I donโ€™t envy Xuโ€™s job: the application of massive amounts of lipstick to a very ugly pig.
