Americans cool on China, slightly

The Pew Research Center — a U.S.-based organization that does regular surveys of global public opinion — has released its latest findings on American attitudes on China:

• 38 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of China, compared with 44 percent in 2017.
• Republicans tend to see economic tensions with China as a more serious problem than Democrats do: “The partisan gap is especially notable when discussing U.S. jobs moving overseas to China, Chinese-held American debt and the bilateral trade deficit.”
• The top concerns about China of the Americans surveyed were, in order:
  • The large amount of American debt held by China
  • Cyberattacks from China
  • China’s impact on the global environment
  • The loss of U.S. jobs to China
  • The U.S. trade deficit with China
  • China’s policies on human rights
  • Territorial disputes between China and its neighbors
  • Tensions between China and Taiwan
