A note from the editor of today's The China Project Access newsletter.

My thoughts today:

Yesterday we noted a reportย that quoted U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun saying that โ€œthere is certainly an invitation there at some point to formalizeโ€ a NATO-like structure out of the Quad, an informal alliance between the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia.

The Kashmir Walla, a Srinagar-based website suggests there might be a connectionย between moves such as the above, and Chinaโ€™s aggressive attitude towards India on their shared, disputed border (see our top story). What will China achieve out of โ€œupping its anteโ€ on Indian borders?

โ€œThe most plausible explanation to this is China wants to put a heavy price on Indiaโ€™s entente with the U.S.โ€

Our word of the dayย is China has never occupied an inch of another countryโ€™s territoryย (ไปŽๆœชไพตๅ ่ฟ‡ๅˆซๅ›ฝไธ€ๅฏธๅœŸๅœฐ cรณngwรจi qฤซnzhร n guรฒ biรฉguรณ yฤซ cรนn tว”dรฌ). This is a quote from a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson about Chinaโ€™s Himalayan standoff with India.
