A note from the editor of today's The China Project Access newsletter.

editor's note for Access newsletter

My thoughts today:

First, a correction:ย Yesterday, I linked to an interesting article by Shailendra Raj Mehtaย about China โ€œobfuscating census dataโ€ and so covering up an impending population crisis. Apologies to Shailendra, who is, of course, a he, not a she, as I mistakenly wrote.

More bad news: Publisher Gฤ›ng Xiฤonรกn ่€ฟ็€Ÿ็”ท and her husband were โ€œseized by police on September 9,โ€ according to CHRD. โ€œGeng first alerted the world to Tsinghua professor Xว” Zhฤngrรนnโ€™sย ่ฎธ็ซ ๆถฆ detentionย in Julyโ€ and tried to raise awareness about the disappearance of citizen journalist Chรฉn Qiลซshรญย ้™ˆ็ง‹ๅฎž in Wuhan in February. Chen has not been seen since. The South China Morning Post has more details.

โ€œIn defense of diplomacy with Chinaโ€ย is a new opinionย piece by James Green,ย who has worked for over two decades on U.S.-China relations for the U.S. government and in the private sector. Heโ€™s not arguing that the U.S. should be soft on China, but that it is self-defeating to stop talking.

Our word of the dayย is naked political persecution and racial discrimination (่ตค่ฃธ่ฃธ็š„ๆ”ฟๆฒป่ฟซๅฎณๅ’Œ็งๆ—ๆญง่ง† chรฌluว’luว’ de zhรจngzhรฌ pรฒhร i hรฉ zhว’ngzรบ qรญshรฌ). See our top story for details.
