A note from the editor of today's The China Project Access newsletter.

editor's note for Access newsletter

My thoughts today:ย

Two things worth your time this weekend, aside from all the summaries and links below:ย

  • Boon or boondoggle? โ€œThe cost and benefit of China’s bullet trains,โ€ by Macro Polo.
  • The Red capitalist โ€” โ€œLessons for Jack Ma on doing the Partyโ€™s business,โ€ from Rong Yiren, by Neil Thomas on The Wire China, which begins thusly:ย ย ย

It was the spring of 1949, and ่ฃๆฏ…ไป Rรณng Yรฌrรฉn had reason to worry. Reportedly one of Chinaโ€™s 10 richest individuals, he hid with his wife and five children in a downstairs corridor of his mansion as the Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army swept through Shanghai and claimed it for the Chinese Communist Party.ย

Upcoming events:

Our word of the day is China Initiative (ไธญๅ›ฝ่กŒๅŠจ่ฎกๅˆ’ zhลngguรณ xรญngdรฒng jรฌhuร ).ย
