Fresh bans for Huawei and ZTE: The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has barred the sale or import of equipment made by Chinese telecom companies Huawei, ZTE, and Hytera Communications, as well as gear from surveillance equipment makers Dahua Technology and Hikvision.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has resigned as chief of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) after its worst local election defeat in decades, while opposition leader Wayne Chiang (a.k.a. Chiang Wan-an, ่”ฃ่ฌๅฎ‰ JiวŽng Wร n’ฤn), the great-grandson of Chiang Kai-shek (่’‹ไป‹็Ÿณ JiวŽng Jiรจshรญ) secured his position as mayor of Taipei. Kris Wu (ๅดไบฆๅ‡ก Wรบ Yรฌfรกn) was sentenced to 13 years in prison for rape and other crimes on Friday, after the Chinese-Canadian pop star was detained last year in one of Chinaโ€™s most high-profile cases in its #MeToo movement.

A Hong Kong court fined 90-year-old Roman Catholic cardinal Joseph Zen (้™ณๆ—ฅๅ› Chรฉn Rรฌjลซn) and five others after being found guilty last Friday of failing to register a now-defunct fund set up to help people arrested in the protests three years ago. Meanwhile, Hong Kongโ€™s chief executive, John Lee (ๆŽๅฎถ่ถ… Lว Jiฤchฤo), said he will ask Beijing to determine whether foreign lawyers are allowed to take part in national security trials in Hong Kong after the cityโ€™s top court upheld an earlier decision to allow a U.K. barrister to represent jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai (้ปŽๆ™บ่‹ฑ Lรญ Zhรฌyฤซng) in a trial that is set to open on Thursday.

More mining profits as manufacturing profits shrink: According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in the first 10 months of the year, the mining industry reported a total profit of 1.39 trillion yuan ($194.25 billion), an increase of 60.4% year-on-year (continuing the trend of mining profits in 2022), while the manufacturing industry reported a total profit of 5.17 trillion yuan ($720.82 billion), a decrease of 13.4%.
