China and U.S. climate envoys meet
From The China Project News Briefing for January 12, 2023
China’s climate envoy, Xiè Zhènhuá 解振华, met with his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, on January 11, per the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment (in Chinese). Both sides agreed to “further maintain communication in the future to jointly address the challenge of climate change.”
- The two climate envoys last met for unofficial talks in November at the United Nations COP27 climate summit in Egypt, breaking months of silence between the two countries over environmental issues.
- The meeting marks the latest thaw between the world’s two biggest polluters, after Beijing froze communications in response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s surprise visit to Taiwan last August.
