Editor’s note for March 3, 2023

A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader,

This weekend, China’s largest annual political gathering begins in Beijing. At the “Two Sessions” (两会 liǎnghuì), loyal supporters of Xí Jìnpíng 习近平 will move into key roles. Some will be tasked with reviving the economy, and investors are hoping for sunny projections — some reports claim the government will set a GDP growth target of 6%.

Are Xi’s men up for the responsibility? Can the economy be restored to health even as the political system turns inward? Watch this space for daily coverage of the meetings and announcements, or click through for our Two Sessions preview and explainer.

Our Phrase of the Week is: Passing your debts onto the next generation (愚公还贷 yúgōng huándài), a new expression internet users have coined after some banks extended the upper age limit on mortgages up to 90 years old.
