Editor’s note for March 10, 2023

A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader,

Xí Jìnpíng 习近平, the General Secretary of the Communist Party, was today “unanimously elected Chinese president” and chairman of the Central Military Commission at the National People’s Congress in Beijing — here’s the official statement in Chinese.

Xi had another success today: Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to reestablish diplomatic relations and reopen embassies after seven years of tensions in a deal brokered by China.

In some ways, that is a win for Beijing. But becoming a player in the Middle East is the kind of victory that can also be a curse!

Our Phrase of the Week is: Unbearably tacky (俗不可耐 sú bùkě nài).
