Dear reader,
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen 蔡英文 (Cài Yīngwén) arrived in New York this afternoon, en route to Central America where she will make official visits to Guatemala and Belize.
On her way back, she’ll stop in Los Angeles, where she is reportedly scheduled to meet U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The DPP sees the visit as a pragmatic option — she chose to see McCarthy in the U.S. rather than hosting him in Taiwan.
But it’s not certain that Beijing will be any less outraged than if she had met him in Taiwan. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Máo Níng 毛宁 today said (English, Chinese) that the “issue is not about China overreacting, but the U.S. egregiously conniving at and supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists.”
Our Word of the Day is: cyberbullying (网络欺凌 wǎngluò qīlíng).
