Editor’s note for April 7, 2023

A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader,

It’s been a week of hectic and mostly successful diplomacy, with visits by French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and by the foreign ministers of Japan, and Saudi Arabia and Iran — who went to China to continue their diplomatic rapprochement.

But not everyone is welcome: Beijing has frozen the visas of two Indian journalists who were set to return to China. The move came at roughly the same time that the Chinese government reiterated its claim to land in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

And on the other side of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen 蔡英文 (Cài Yīngwén) met with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California. The visit was just the latest in a series of encounters between senior leaders of Taiwan and a variety of other countries.

The world is changing in front of our eyes. But at least — this week, anyway — there seems to be more talking than stalking.
