Editor’s note for May 4, 2023

A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader:

One of the absurdities of the current moment of global geopolitical tension is how companies are trying to stay out of trouble by obscuring the truth about their investments, supply chains, and locations.

In today’s Newsbase section, we note that TikTok and CapCut — both owned by Beijing-based ByteDance — are listed as Singaporean in the iPhone and Google Play app stores.

In the News Briefing section, we report that PDD Group — the company behind China’s discount ecommerce giant Pinduoduo and its global version Temu — has moved its global headquarters to Dublin, Ireland, but is telling Chinese media that its heart will forever be in Shanghai.

Our Word of the Day is:

Pinduoduo has been and will always be headquartered in Shanghai, China, and will not change.

拼多多总部始终在中国上海,不会改变。
