Dear reader:

Our top story today is about fee hikes announced by many Chinese universities for the next school year. One cause appears to be that local governments need to find more ways to raise or save money as they continue to face financial burdens caused by COVID-zero policies, and the doldrums of the real estate industry and wider economy.

Nonetheless, China’s universities remain very cheap, at least by American standards: In Shanghai, the government-set limit for the standard tuition fee for science and engineering undergraduate degrees is 7,400 yuan ($1,039) per annum.
