Editor’s note for June 9, 2023
A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.
Dear reader,
In April, a United Nations report stated that India’s population would this year reach 1.428 billion, surpassing China’s 1.426 billion.
The first time that change really registered for me was today, when I read a Financial Times story about Chinese companies that are trying to operate again in India after they were ejected by a government ban in 2020.
The article’s subheading was: “Fashion brand Shein, maker of mobile game ‘BGMI’ and venture capital find ways back into world’s most populous market.” I did a double take as my brain tried to adjust to the fact that the “world’s most populous market” no longer refers to China.
That’s one of the many changes in the P.R.C. that have happened under Xí Jìnpíng 习近平, who is the subject of our Q&A today, which we’ve paired with two new pieces on Xi’s past and present.
