Long read: A Chinese spy and the Canadians arrested for spying in Dandong

“For years, China has systematically looted American trade secrets. Here’s the messy inside story of how D.C. got Beijing to clean up its act for a while” is the tagline on a Wired magazine story about the arrest in Canada of a man who stole industrial secrets for China.

If you’ve got some time to spare, read the whole thing. One part of the story that stood out: We finally have an explanation for the espionage charges against the Christian Canadian couple, Julia and Kevin Garratt, who ran a café in Dandong, a town just across the Yalu River from North Korea. In 2014, they were detained and accused of being spies.

Spoiler: It turns out that the charges were retribution for the capture of the spy in Canada.
