As mass protests against Beijingโ€™s hard-line COVID-zero policy erupt in China, Chinese citizens abroad are adding their voices to the activism at home.

Last night at Columbia University in New York, a group of several hundred people lit candles, chanted slogans, and displayed signs in a demonstration that lasted about an hour and a half. The event was in remembrance of Chinaโ€™s COVID-induced lockdown victims and in support of ending the policy, allowing for public grieving of victims in China, the release of those arrested in the recent protests, free speech, and human rights.

The group was organized by an unknown group of Chinese and Chinese Americans living in New York using the messaging app Telegram. The event was promoted on the Instagram account @citizensdailycn, which is also promoting other similar gatherings in cities around the world.

On Tuesday, another gathering was held in front of the Chinese consulate in New York. Hundreds of people showed up for the demonstration, which lasted about two and a half hours. The demands were the same as the organizing at Columbia University but more focused on giving individuals the chance to speak to the crowd.
