Editor’s note for February 2, 2023
A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Antarctica and China’s space and global marine ambitions are all part of our top story today, about Beijing’s plans to build two ground stations at its South Pole base to support its growing network of ocean monitoring satellites.
Up to 10,000 Uyghur refugees may be welcomed into Canada after the country’s parliament voted unanimously to approve a bill motion that would grant entry to Turkic Muslims who are in danger of being returned to China, where they face persecution.
Our word of the day is: ocean observation satellite ground system (海洋观测卫星地面系统 hǎiyáng guāncè wèixīng dìmiàn xìtǒng). This is what media reports are calling two new ground stations planned for East Antarctica to support China’s growing network of ocean monitoring satellites.
