BYD aims to become India’s second-largest electric-car maker
China’s top-selling electric-car maker BYD is aiming to become India’s second-largest EV company this year, behind only homegrown car producer Tata Motors, as it rolls out more models including a battery-powered premium saloon. “If the technology has been accepted by consumers, then we can’t say no to the demand,” Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, BYD’s senior vice-president for India, told the Financial Times. E-commerce giants Alibaba and Tencent climbed on Friday despite reports the Chinese government is working to take so-called ‘golden shares’ in units of both companies. State-run investment funds have taken 1% stakes in two local Alibaba subsidiaries and appointed a board member to one of the units, Reuters reported, citing business-registration records. The Chinese government is also looking at taking a stake in one of Tencent’s main China operating subsidiaries, the Financial Times reported, citing people at the company briefed on the matter.

China is moving to take “golden shares” in local units of Alibaba and Tencent as Beijing formalises a greater role in overseeing the country’s powerful technology groups. While the heavy-handed crackdown has ebbed, the government is increasingly snapping up small equity stakes in the local operations of big tech companies, as it recently did with TikTok owner ByteDance. The stakes, usually involving a 1 per cent share of internet groups’ key entities, are akin to “golden shares” as they come with special rights over certain business decisions.
