A South Korea detente derailed?

Politics & Current Affairs

Only a week ago, South Korean President Moon Jae-in visited Beijingย and pledged a โ€œnew startโ€ after over a year of troubled relations. The visit was marred, however, by Chinese security agents seriously injuring some visiting journalists โ€” including kicking one in the head โ€” leading South Korea to demand an apology. No apology has been given. In fact, South Korea has reportedlyย felt a few more swipes to the face:

  • โ€œA fleet of 44 Chinese fishing boatsโ€ swarmedย a South Korean coast guard boat in the countryโ€™s waters, prompting it to fire 249 warning shots,ย Reutersย reports.
  • China has banned tour groups from visitingย South Korea, two tour groups confirmedย to the Financial Times (paywall).
