A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader,

Our top story today is about the leaders of China and South Korea getting together tomorrow, in a development that will not be pleasing to Beijing.

But the most sensationalist China news today is that the international conman, Steve Bannon buddy, and exiled Chinese real estate billionaire Guō Wénguì 郭文贵 has been charged in the U.S. for defrauding investors in online scams.

Here’s the Reuters report on Guo being charged with 11 criminal counts including securities fraud, wire fraud, and concealment of money laundering.

Here’s a Sinica podcast interview Kaiser Kuo and I did in October 2022 with the New Yorker’s Evan Osnos, who had just written a long and fascinating feature story about Guo.
