Biden defends calling Chinese leader Xi a 'dictator' and says he still expects to meet with him
President Joe Biden is defending his harsh public comments on China, including calling President Xi Jinping a dictator. He says his words would have no negative impact on U.S.-China relations and that he still expects to meet with Xi sometime soon. Biden says his blunt statements regarding China are “just not something I’m going to change very much.” The remarks, which drew a formal protest from China, opened a new rift just days after Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a visit to Beijing that was meant as a step toward stabilizing ties and improving communications.

US Coast Guard ship sailed through Taiwan Strait a day after Blinken's China visit
A U.S. Coast Guard ship sailed through the Taiwan Strait a day after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken completed a trip to Beijing during which he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in a move that Chinese authorities called “public hype.” The U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement Thursday that the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Stratton conducted a “routine Taiwan Strait transit” on June 20 through waters where “high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law." China often maintains that the strait, which separates Taiwan and mainland China, is part of its exclusive economic zone, while the U.S. and its allies regularly sail through and fly over the passage to emphasize their contention that the waters are international.

Germany warns China over Taiwan, voices human rights concerns days after talks with Chinese premier
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned Beijing against using force to change the status quo with Taiwan and expressed concern about the human rights situation in China. Scholz's remarks to German lawmakers Thursday come just days after holding bilateral talks with the new Chinese premier. Scholz said Berlin wants constructive relations with China because the country plays a key role in solving global problems such as food security, climate change and poverty. Scholz’s comments were significantly more explicit than his public remarks at a joint statement Tuesday with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who was on his first foreign trip since taking charge of China's economy as premier in March. Journalists were not permitted to ask questions at the event.
