Honduras opens embassy in China after breaking off ties with Taiwan
Chinese state media say Honduras has opened an embassy in Beijing. The move comes after the Central American nation broke off relations with Taiwan to establish diplomatic ties with China in March. China's official CCTV says Foreign Minister Qin Gang and his Honduran counterpart Enrique Reina took part in the inauguration of the embassy on Sunday morning. The symbol of the two sides' strengthening diplomatic ties came during Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s six-day visit to China. Before arriving in Beijing, Castro visited the Shanghai headquarters of the New Development Bank, a bank established by the BRICS developing nations, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

According to the ministry's statement on Sunday, China's assistant foreign minister Nong Rong had expressed dissatisfaction over South Korea’s response to the meeting between Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming and a South Korean opposition leader. It said he hoped Seoul would deeply reflect on the relationship problems between the two nations and work with China to promote healthy and stable ties.

That's according to a Biden administration official who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. The U.S. intelligence community has been aware of China’s effort to set up intelligence-gathering operations around the globe for some time. The Biden administration has stepped up efforts to thwart the Chinese and believes it has made some progress. The existence of the Chinese spy base was confirmed after The Wall Street Journal reported that China and Cuba had reached an agreement to build an electronic eavesdropping station on the island.
